What is periodontics?
This term refers to treatment of all problems of the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Each tooth is embedded in the bone, strongly united by a series of structures that ensure their proper functioning and strength. Sometimes, the structures that surround and support the teeth (gums and bone), are affected significantly. This triggers a continuous degenerative process that progresses slowly, reaching an advanced stage in which the tooth moves over and ends "falling." Before that happens, the teeth go through several well defined stages, from mild impairment to advanced stages of tooth loss. This is called periodontitis, and is popularly known as "pyorrhea.

What are the causes?
The main cause is an infection caused by different types of bacteria. Most of these bacteria are normally in the mouth of any individual, but some people have a defense system that is not effective against them, that is when the infection occurs. Gradually, these harmful bacteria are weakening the gums and bone, so that the teeth are increasingly debilitated.

Sometimes this afectactación could cause heart problems in susceptible patients.

Is there a solution?
In the initial state can be corrected. But tends to be a chronic picture. This means that when the state of the disease is advanced and has lost much support bone, the most we can do is stop the progression of the disease not to go further. The bone loss is difficult to recover. However regenerative techniques that are sometimes very good result. It is the dentist who has to assess whether the patient is susceptible to such treatment.

The basic treatment is to eliminate existing infection thoroughly cleaning the whole mouth, under local anesthesia. If the state is very advanced and requires regeneration, it needs a little surgery with local anesthesia. The treatment may be supplemented with antibiotics.

The patient should be aware of their problem and assume that after the initial treatment, at least once a year should go to the dentist for cleanings performed maintenance for the rest of his life. Oral hygiene is essential to address such problems. Only in this way is achieved an effective therapy.

Basic treatment step by step
The basic treatment consists of thorough cleaning of the gums by aircraft ultrasonic curette (scan tools), and polishers. All this is aimed at eliminating the bacterial plaque causing the problem. The patient is able to clean the exposed part of the teeth in the mouth, but you can not access the portion of tooth that is below the gum. This task is you are going to the dentist, so that after cleaning, inflation declines and returns to the gum to adhere to the tooth, forming a barrier that no bacteria. The basic treatment is performed in parts. The mouth is divided into 4 quadrants, each of which is covered in different sessions. Each cleaning session is performed under local anesthesia, so it does not hurt. Its duration is about 45-60 min. At the close of the meeting and refer the anesthetic effect, the patient referred a few annoyances, and 3 or 4 days in the state of the gums improved remarkably. From this moment will be the patient who must maintain the health of your gums and go to regular review every 4 to 6 months.

Regenerative therapy
In severe cases, when the effect is very pronounced and has been extended in time, the patient has experienced a significant loss of bone. In these cases, before any restorative treatment, we must restore as far as possible the structures lost. This makes use of various biomaterials: membranes, amelogenina, bone, etc.. All this is combined effectively to restore the anatomy lost.
